Yeast infection does not only occur in the vagina or the penis. This also occurs in the mouth. Candida infection in the mouth is called thrush. Thrush can occur to just anybody: man or woman, baby or adult, healthy or unhealthy. But this usually occurs in babies and toddlers, older adults and people with lower immune system.

When there is an overgrowth of Candida, this causes thrush. This might be due to factors like illness, stress, or medications like antibiotics, corticosteroids, and even birth control pills. Medications that can lower the number of both good and bad bacteria, especially bacteria that prevents the growth of Candida can cause the increase in growth of Candida leading to thrush.

People with thrush usually have creamy white substance, slightly raised lesions present in the mouth. Lesions are usually located on the tongue or inner cheeks. They can also occur on the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils or even the back of the throat.

Lesions also have a cottage cheese appearance and are painful. Bleeding can also occur when the lesions are scraped or when you brush your teeth. But in severe cases, the lesion can also spread to the esophagus and this can cause pain or difficulty swallowing. This can also give a feeling that a food is stuck in the throat or mid-chest area, and fever.

Thrush is dangerous as this can also spread to other parts of the body. This can spread to the lungs, liver and skin. This usually occurs in people with cancer, HIV, or other conditions that led to the weakening of the immune system.

If you see symptoms of thrush in your mouth, you have to consult the doctor immediately. Your doctor will look for the distinctive white lesions on your mouth, tongue or cheeks. They will also perform a microscopic examination of the tissue from a lesion to confirm the diagnosis. But if the thrush has already spread to the esophagus, your doctor would have to perform other test like throat culture or endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.

You're lucky if you only have a mild case of thrush as this can easily be cured with active culture yoghurt. The yoghurt is held in the mouth for 30 to 60 seconds with each bite. Active culture yoghurt can be sour thought. But if you add banana or a little honey then blend it with a cup or two of yoghurt, you can remove or decrease the sour taste. Ice can also be added.

Severe cases of thrush, on the other hand, can only be cured with antifungal medications. Doctors would usually prescribe the use of antifungal medications for 10 to-- days. There are different antifungal medications that you can choose from: tablets, lozenges or even liquids. The advice of medical doctor is also recommended as the presence of candida might be a sign of an underlying medical problem that needs to be treated.
